A Bit of History...
Adams-Franklin Seedling Nursery was
founded in 1979 by Dave Adams and John Franklin
on 3 acres near Canby, Oregon. Dave, a retired County Extension Agent
advised and oversaw
the business-end of things, while John,
an entrepreneur from Michigan, managed
the farming side.
They began growing conifer seedlings and ornamental azaleas, but switched
to growing bareroot conifer seedlings exclusively in 1983. By 2001, retirement was
sounding pretty appealing to
John & Dave, and in February of that same year they sold the nursery to Ioka
Farms, Inc., a
century-farm based in the Silverton Hills of Oregon. Ioka Farms then
expanded the steadily
growing nursery to fifteen acres. Since 2001, Adams-Franklin has been
continuing to grow. Fresh-cut
Christmas Trees were added to the product line in 2007, and the name of the
nursery was changed to
simply Adams-Franklin Nursery. Also in 2007, multiple greenhouses to
facilitate plug production of the conifer seedlings. By producing the plug seedlings
"in-house", we are able to have better control of
our P+1 bareroot seedlings, and are able to offer a complete line of
seedlings for grafting understock.
Adams-Franklin Nursery takes
pride in planting only the highest quality seed stock and transplants.
Extreme care is taken during the stratification and planting processes to ensure
maximum growth of
newly planted seeds and transplants. Careful watering and application of
premium slow-release
fertilizers play a crucial role during the delicate growing periods.
During the first two years of growth,
we use the Reciprocating Undercutter/Wrencher to trim the vertical root growth
system. This
undercutting process prepares the seedling for transplanting, gives the trees a
more concentrated root
system, and more feeder roots. A higher survival rate and healthier plants
are also benefits of this
process. To maintain seedling quality, insecticides and fungicides are
applied during critical times
during the growing process to hinder disease and any possible damage to the
trees. Our excellent
irrigation system not only keeps the soil at the correct moisture levels, but
also protects the
delicate trees from frost.
Our harvest takes place during
the winter months of January, February, and March. We have three, state-of-the-art coolers that allow us to dig the seedlings according to
customer needs. We then sort and
grade according to caliper & overall size of the tree, and then root prune, bag,
and store the trees until
you are ready to pick them up. Our plug harvesting also takes place during
the months of January
and February, as well as during the fall to
better serve the needs of our
growing customer base.
